Creating a sustainable care environment means managing our environmental costs – such as heating, lighting, and water. However, sustainability means much more than that. With two large hospitals on our two campuses, it is essential that we care about our environmental impact for now and for the future. Below are some important updates on how we are achieving these goals at Sinai Health.
Full-time environmental sustainability coordinator role established
In June, Tracey Clatworthy officially started in the newly established role of Environmental Sustainability Coordinator for Sinai Health System. Over the past eight years, many of you will have gotten to know Tracey and her passion for environmental sustainability initiatives in her voluntary role as co-chair of the Green Sinai Health committee. Tracey can now continue her great work in leading Sinai Health towards becoming an environmentally responsible organization by reducing our environmental footprint.
This role is responsible for managing building sustainability projects on new and existing buildings and will develop corporate-wide policies and procedures in order to improve Sinai Health’s sustainability efforts and reduce energy, waste and water consumption. Single Green Sinai Health Committee
This fall, the Bridgepoint and Mount Sinai Hospital Green Committees will merge to form a single, Green Sinai Health Committee to work on environmental sustainability projects across our campuses.
Recognition from Green Hospital Scorecard
Sinai Health received a silver designation from the Green Hospital Scorecard for all of our sites. The Green Hospital Scorecard is the only comprehensive health care bench marking tool in Canada measuring energy conservation, water conservation, waste management and recycling, corporate commitment and pollution prevention. Our Mount Sinai Hospital campus won two Ontario Green Health Care Awards. Within the peer group of Academic hospitals, Mount Sinai won both energy and water categories for 2017.

Partnership with Orde Street Junior Public school
This past year, Tracey partnered with Mount Sinai Hospital’s neighbour, Orde Street Junior Public School, to create an EcoTeam and certify them for their first ever EcoSchool designation by helping to implement energy and waste conservation initiatives throughout the year. They received silver designation, which is an amazing accomplishment for a first year participant. The EcoTeam kids collected plastic water bottles for two months and decided to create a Water Monster that they presented to the school for World Water Day awareness and to promote the use of reusable water bottles.
