Every day a significant number of high-risk and critically ill babies in Mount Sinai Hospital’s NICU rely on breast milk that is delivered through a bottle or small tube because they are unable to breastfeed.

Thanks to a new application developed to work with barcoding technology, the hospital’s tiniest, most fragile patients are not only surviving, but thriving.

The recently launched barcoding and scanner system is a patient safety initiative that reduces the risk of viral and bacterial transmissions during the collection, storage, preparation and administration of breast milk by ensuring the right milk gets to the right baby, every time.
