Here we go!
I am pleased to share that redevelopment at Mount Sinai is entering its construction phase. For those of you who were at Mount Sinai during the construction of the new floors on Murray Street and the building of our new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), labour and delivery, and wards, you know the incredible amount of planning, logistics and day-to-day operational requirements needed to pull off such a major project.
Many of you know Tony Khouri, who leads our Redevelopment Project Office, from his oversight of both Bridgepoint’s new facility and the recent redevelopment at Mount Sinai. For over a year, he and his team have been working with the Operational Readiness and Transitional Planning team, led by Bryna Rabishaw, to develop high-level strategies, detailed plans and operational, construction and transitional schedules that will be implemented and rolled out with your cooperation and participation. We will make sure that construction is carried out safely, while we continue to ensure the highest standard of care for our patients.
Starting next month, you will start to see the construction team from EllisDon at Mount Sinai Hospital. We anticipate Phase 3A will take approximately six years to complete. This is about as big of a project as we have ever done.
I think I can safely speculate that nobody is eagerly awaiting the inconveniences of construction. However, the payback will be leading edge facilities for our patients. When our redevelopment is complete we will have new state of the art automated operating rooms, an emergency department that is double its current size, and a transformed critical care unit. So, apologies in advance – the hoarding, vibrations, and disruptions will begin this summer – it will be messy, and it will be worth it.
