Dr. David Yan is the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief for Sinai Health. He has been a staff Ophthalmologist at Mount Sinai Hospital for over 20 years, specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, and complex cataract surgery.  He is the Director of Glaucoma Service both here at Mount Sinai Hospital and Kensington Eye Institute and has held staff positions at University Health Network and St. Joseph’s Health Centre. He has been the Chair of the Canadian Glaucoma and Cataract Research Council, a peer-reviewed glaucoma research funding body administered by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and President of the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Yan is the Founder and Director of the Toronto Ophthalmology Residency Course, which was the first national specialty residency training program in Canada attended by all Canadian ophthalmology residents. He is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Education

Dr. Yan first studied engineering at University of Toronto (Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering) prior to entering the field of medicine. He then went on to earn his medical degree in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Research

Dr. Yan’s research interests include peer-reviewed publications on aqueous outflow, medical and surgical glaucoma therapy and optic nerve imaging.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Yan is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Clive Mortimer Award for excellence in postgraduate teaching, Golden Suture Award for glaucoma surgery teaching, Silver Needle Award for best cataract surgery teacher at the University of Toronto and the Millenium Award for academic program development.
