Delegation from Singapore visiting Mount Sinai

In early May, a delegation from Singapore visited Mount Sinai’s Emergency Department to learn more about models of care for elderly patients. Visiting from the renowned Singapore General Hospital, Mr. Linus Tan, senior physiotherapist, Ms. Rhina Yeow, senior medical social worker, Ms. Joey Liu, senior staff nurse of Emergency Department, and Dr. Jean Lee, senior consultant of Emergency Department came to learn more about practices and future directions from experts in the field of geriatrics and emergency medicine.

Like Canada, Singapore is currently experiencing an unprecedented rise in their senior population, and this team is investigating best practices for delivering care to this distinct and growing group of patients.

Dr. Don Melady, staff physician and geriatric lead at the Schwartz-Reisman Emergency Centre spent considerable time with the delegation. “We were honoured to have been approached by a team from one of the most important hospitals in Asia who wanted to learn about improving care of older people in the Emergency Department, and the interface between the ED and the community,” says Dr. Melady. “Singapore’s health care system is quite similar to the system in Ontario, and we were able to show them some of the good work we do in our ED, our inpatient geriatrics service, as well as the innovative programmes of Sinai Health’s system partner, Circle of Care and the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network.”

Thanks to Singapore General Hospital for allowing us the opportunity to share our expertise.
